ISO 42001 Certification Process
The certification process at Imperium Certific complies with ISO/IEC 17021-1 requirements.
Stage 1 — Application and Preliminary Review — The organization submits a certification application. We analyze the AIMS scope, AI system types and count, risk categories, data processing volume and organizational complexity to determine the audit scope.
Stage 2 — Stage 1 Audit (Documentation Review) — AIMS readiness assessment: review of AI policy, AI risk assessment, AI impact assessment, AI system registry, data management procedures, transparency and accountability, Statement of Applicability for Annex A and B controls.
Stage 3 — Stage 2 Audit (On-site) — The audit team verifies practical AIMS functioning: AI system lifecycle management, model development and validation processes, data quality management, production AI system monitoring, bias detection and mitigation procedures, incident management and stakeholder feedback.
Stage 4 — Certification Decision — An audit report is prepared. The certification decision is made independently from the audit team, ensuring impartiality.
Stage 5 — Certificate Issuance — The ISO/IEC 42001 certificate is issued for a 3-year period. Certification information is entered into the Imperium Certific registry.
Stage 6 — Surveillance Audits — Annual surveillance audits confirm continued AIMS functioning and improvement. A recertification audit is conducted before the certificate expires.

FAQ
Annex A contains a set of controls for AI system management, similar to Annex A in ISO 27001. Annex B provides implementation guidance. Organizations select controls based on their AI risk assessment and prepare a Statement of Applicability.
The EU AI Act is a mandatory EU regulation establishing legal requirements for AI systems. ISO 42001 is a voluntary management system standard that helps organizations systematically meet these requirements. The European Commission considers ISO 42001 a harmonized standard for demonstrating EU AI Act compliance.
ISO 27001 is not a mandatory prerequisite. However, having ISO 27001 significantly simplifies implementation as many controls relate to information security. The standards can undergo a combined audit.
